UVA Wise will host its first Egg Hunt for the local community on Saturday, April 8 from noon through 2 p.m. on campus. Families are invited to bring their children to hunt for eggs. And, UVA Wise students, local businesses and Town of Wise leaders are contributing their time to host craft and activity booths.
In preparation for the event, UVA Wise students are filling more than 4,000 eggs for local children to find at the hunt, which is free and open to the public, and will take place at the College’s Lawn by the Lake on the center of campus.
Both the Easter Bunny as well as UVA Wise’s mascot, Smiddy, will make appearances at the Egg Hunt. Some of the activities that day include the UVA Wise theatre department putting on a preview of an upcoming play, WAXM FM 93.5 broadcasting live, and Rural King doing their “Straw Scramble.” Free treats and snacks will be available, and student organizations will be painting eggs as well as providing face painting. There is also an Easter basket giveaway, with baskets provided by businesses in the Town of Wise.
“Our goal is to connect our college and the community and to show visitors to our campus what we are all about,” says Heather Evans, John Morton Beaty Endowed Chair in Political Science.
Evans heads up the College’s experiential learning efforts, which help students apply the knowledge, theories and skills learned in the classroom to real-world scenarios that they can later reflect upon and grow from.
“Everything about this day is experiential. Any and all students who want to participate – and community members — are welcome! The Town of Wise, business partners and student organizations are each offering a craft or a fun activity like yard bowling and musical chairs.”
